Zu lat. nota »Kennzeichen, Merkzeichen; schriftliche Anmerkung; Schriftstück« (vgl. ↑ Note) gehört das abgeleitete Adjektiv lat. notarius »zum ‹Schnell›schreiben gehörig«, das substantiviert »Schnellschreiber; Schreiber; Sekretär« bedeutet. Über mlat. notarius »durch kaiserliche Gewalt bestellter öffentlicher Schreiber« gelangte das Wort in ahd. Zeit in die dt. Kanzleisprache (ahd. notāri, mhd. noder, notari‹e›). Im juristischen Sprachgebrauch wurde es dann zur Bezeichnung eines staatlich vereidigten Volljuristen, der die Beglaubigung und Beurkundung von Rechtsgeschäften besorgt. – Abl.: notarisch »von einem Notar ausgefertigt und beglaubigt« (16. Jh.), dafür auch notariell (20. Jh.; mit französierender Endung gebildet); Notariat »Amt eines Notars« (16. Jh.; aus mlat. notariatus).
